London's most desirable neighborhoods have lost 11,000 worker residents. That's in contrast with the majority of London’s 33 local authorities, where the number of payrolled employees has risen, and the UK as a whole. It suggests that flexible working, cost-of-living pressures and the lure of jobs in places like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are drawing workers away from areas of the capital where houses sell for millions and tenants can spend half of their income on rent. It’s been fascinating for me to chronicle the rise of Apple’s growing manufacturing prowess in India. Apple got serious about assembling iPhones in India in 2021, helped by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s subsidies. Its suppliers Foxconn Technology Group, Wistron and Pegatron soon expanded in India (homegrown conglomerate Tata Group now owns Wistron and controls Pegatron). As India’s relationship with China soured, Apple began taking small steps to localise its supply chain. That was also necessitated by its diversification drive away from China, or what’s popularly called “China + 1” strategy, following Covid. So what does all of this amount to? Apple now makes about one in five iPhones in India, which amounts to 20% of its global iPhone production. And notwithstanding tariffs, India share in iPhone production will rise steadily. Yes, some more iPhone-laden planes from India flew off to US due to “reciprocal” tariffs, but Apple’s made and exported more iPhones from the South Asian country on average every month in the last fiscal compared to the previous year. In the current unpredictable geopolitical climate there are more questions than answers. Will China lose its share in global manufacturing including that of iPhones and electric cars? Can Trump get Apple to make iPhones in the US? We try and break down the details for you. Follow and read Bloomberg News to know more about Apple’s India push. https://lnkd.in/gbkupedy

Mideast Money weekend read, via Alex Dooler The giants of private equity have spent years trying to cozy up to Middle Eastern wealth funds to secure massive checks. US President Donald Trump’s burgeoning trade war just made those efforts even more critical — and asset managers have been forced to get creative. Carlyle, for instance, is sending more than half a dozen of its top executives to Abu Dhabi this week to offer training to their counterparts at the emirate’s many sovereign wealth funds. BlackRock is starting up a program to hire more young Saudis and is relocating a bevy of senior investment professionals to the kingdom to help with the effort. Others have been organizing dinners and events to honor Eid al-Fitr. “It’s not just about opening an office,” said Bhaskar Gupta, the chairman of the Middle East and India boards at Apex Group, a fund servicing company. “Building meaningful relationships through local customs — like evening shisha gatherings, weekend hunting trips, and shared dinners — plays a vital role in establishing trust and long-term partnerships.” https://lnkd.in/dMBYSMpx
