EU Top Diplomat Says NATO Mutual Defense Clause Is ‘Very Clear’

NATO’s Article 5 is “very, very clear” about allies’ commitment to defend one another when attacked, the European Union’s top diplomat said after Donald Trump appeared to question its meaning.

The US president said on Tuesday aboard Air Force One that the clause, which has been the cornerstone of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, “depends on your definition.” Trump’s remarks on the eve of the alliance’s high-stakes summit in The Hague fueled doubts about his administration’s commitment to the western military alliance.
