A new community for the new economy

About us

Established in 2018 by Michael Bloomberg, the New Economy seeks to build a community of leaders to engage in real conversations—leading to actionable solutions—about the critical challenges facing a world economy in the throes of a historic transition. The inaugural Forum was held in Singapore, and the second annual Forum was hosted in Beijing. These covered a range of topics, including global economic management, trade and investment, technology, urbanization, capital markets, climate change and inclusion. Mike Bloomberg, the Founder of Bloomberg L.P., brings to the Forum the same pragmatic approach to problem-solving that marked his tenure as the three-term Mayor of New York City.

#ASCO2025, you were phenomenal! A milestone moment for the Bloomberg New Economy #InternationalCancerCoalition, showing up stronger than ever with not one, but two major convenings on the sidelines! We kicked off the week(end) with our Coalition Roundtable, where Dr. Julie Gralow welcomed us to ASCO by spotlighting this year’s theme “Driving Knowledge to Action”and ASCO’s domestic and global commitment to equitable cancer care. This message set the tone as we introduced our Rural America Taskforce with Dr. Tufia Haddad, M.D. and Dr. Robert Daly driving momentum to close cancer care gaps in U.S. healthcare deserts that still exist far too widely today. A big thank you to Dr. Sabe Sabesan for the now-iconic DCT lasagna framework, and to Dr. T. Peter Kingham and Dr. Carlos Dos Anjos for sharing incredible progress from the LATAM and Africa Taskforces. Deep gratitude to Mary Kosinski and Paul George for being the strategic communications backbone of this Coalition’s growth. Then came our biggest ICC activation yet: the launch of the Pan American Cancer Consortium. With the support of AZ and the ever-energizing Dr. Julie Gralow, and the visionary Dr. Bob Li. We explored how cross-border collaboration can reimagine multidisciplinary cancer care across the Americas. Our panels explored: 🌎Voices from the Frontlines in LATAM Showcased how local leaders are navigating resource gaps, workforce strain, and system differences, with innovation and grit. Thank you Dr. Carlos Henrique dos Anjos, Dr. Jorge Arturo Alatorre Alexander, and Dr. Claudio Martin for your insights as we create the path forward. 🌎Canada & U.S. Perspectives on MDTs Offered a blueprint for scaling international tumor boards and institutional collaboration. Moderated by our Global Head Lauren Kiel and special thanks to Dr. Pedram Razavi, Dr. Adrian Sacher Dr. Bruna Pellini and Dr. Estelamari Rodriguez for your valuable perspectives. As I leave Chicago, I’m reflecting on how far this Coalition has come in just a few years. From a simple cocktail reception in year 1️⃣ to two major events in year 5️⃣! It’s been a joy to convene and collaborate with some of the brightest minds in global oncology and thank you to everyone who continues to lend your time, voice, and imagination to this mission. As always, thank you to Justin Finnegan, not only for the vision, but for bringing heart and clarity to the mission. I genuinely couldn’t ask for a better partner in this!!

Editorial Director at Bloomberg New Economy

I’ve been fortunate in my role at Bloomberg New Economy to count on the counsel of some exceptional advisors. Before his death in 2023, Henry Kissinger, then the honorary chairman of our advisory board, was full of invaluable perspective on geopolitics generally and China specifically. I vividly remember a briefing with him that August. My colleagues and I were seated around a small coffee table in his office on Manhattan’s Madison Ave. It was mid-afternoon and so Kissinger, ever the European, served tea with cakes and cookies. The former secretary of state held forth on a number of hot topics. He questioned the rationale behind curbs the US government had placed on exports of high-powered semiconductors and related equipment to China. And on artificial intelligence, he shared an inner conflict: While AI could, he reasoned, usher in a new Enlightenment of scientific discovery and philosophical investigation, he said he wished it “had never been invented.” It was a memorable conversation. We also needed some advice. Kissinger, then 100, was relinquishing his advisory role. Understandably. So was Hank Paulson, our board chairman who’d previously served as treasury secretary and CEO of Goldman Sachs. Whom should we approach to succeed them? Since 2018, Bloomberg New Economy has been convening top executives and government leaders for vital discussions about obstacles to prosperous and sustainable growth. In both public and private sessions at our gatherings, we’ve focused on bridging divides over trade, finance, technology, energy and security, hoping to foster the kind of cooperation that leads to real progress. This November, we’re bringing the New Economy Forum, our flagship event, back to Singapore.  We knew navigating the complexities of modern geopolitics would be challenging. Kissinger said it was important that the advisory board be truly global, with a diverse group of members, and he recommended we have two co-chairs, one from the US, one from Europe. I’m pleased to report that we succeeded on both counts. Bloomberg New Economy’s new advisory board represents 10 countries (and counting) and boasts experience in economics, in drug discovery, in investment, in central banking, in artificial intelligence, in fintech, in policy research, in software, in philanthropy, and at the highest levels of public service. Our co-chairs: Gina Raimondo, the former US commerce secretary and former governor of Rhode Island, and Mario Draghi, the former prime minister of Italy and former president of the European Central Bank. Thank you, Gina Raimondo, Mario Draghi, Joko Widodo, Marc Rowan, Gita Gopinath, Ravi Menon, Suresh Prabhu, Noubar Afeyan, Charles Phillips, Kai-Fu Lee, Jorge Paulo Lemann, Dawn Fitzpatrick, Strive Masiyiwa, David Vélez, Josephine Wapakabulo, Steven Rattner and Jing Qian. We look forward to your guidance.  https://lnkd.in/e9kfSPxR
