Warren Buffet’s impending retirement leaves a question mark over a company in which he has invested more than $24 billion over the past 6 years: Occidental Petroleum. The first $10 billion (since reduced to $8.5 billion) was in the form of high-cost preferreds to help Oxy win the bidding for Anadarko Petroleum. If it can be called a win. This was one of the worst oil deals of recent vintage and its effects hangs over Oxy’s balance sheet and credibility. Nonetheless, Berkshire Hathaway has also been a big buyer of Oxy’s common shares, amassing a 28% stake - which is now underwater by several billion dollars and unlikely to improve in the near term amid weak oil prices. Buffett’s largesse has been both a support for Oxy but also an enabler of hubris. His successor will have to decide what to do with that legacy. Most climate-change deniers don’t even bother fighting the established science anymore: The planet is warming, human activity is the cause, and we can do something about it if we really try. Modern deniers will concede all that, but fire back that the “do something about it” part is too hard, too expensive to be worth trying. We have to be pragmatic, they’ll say, and keep burning fossil fuels to make life easier on people. But we keep finding evidence that not doing something about it will be far more expensive and hard on people. The estimated $87 trillion in damages corporate America's emissions are inflicting on us is just the start. Being truly pragmatic means leaving fossil fuels behind as quickly as possible.
