US auto manufacturers are half way through a tumultuous year. Trump’s trade war and reshoring plans have thrown guidance for a loop. And after a pre-tariffs surge in new car sales, the rest of 2025 looks more subdued. Auto investors should look elsewhere; namely to the dealerships. For them, the overall level of auto sales isn’t the most important factor. Their most profitable year in recent memory was actually 2021, when the pandemic had hit production and sales hard - but also inventory, engendering a rare moment of pricing power. More importantly, the pandemic taught Americans to hang onto their cars for longer, and higher, tariff-fueled prices will do the same this year. That tees up more high-margin services and parts business for the dealerships. Read about it here at Bloomberg Opinion https://lnkd.in/eJeJqbfX

Linda Yaccarino surely knew what she was getting into when she went to work for Elon Musk. But for any woman who has tried to make it to the top of corporate America, there is likely a glimmer of recognition behind the events that first drove Yaccarino out of traditional media and into X. She opted to take the path that is so often the only one available to women who aspire to be the big boss: cleaning up the mess of another one of Silicon Valley’s boy geniuses. It’s yet another reminder that for women, power so often comes with an asterisk. I wrote about this phenomenon a year ago for Bloomberg Opinion. https://lnkd.in/eGyZiyMa
Nvidia just cemented itself as a kingpin of the global financial market. Shares jumped 2.8% to $164.42 Wednesday to hit the $4 trillion milestone after a rough start to the year sparked by China's DeepSeek and President Trump's trade war. COLUMN: It should be one of the most coveted jobs in the City of London: chairing BP. Finding a candidate, though, is proving tricky. An honest description of the role should read something like this: “Leading the board, the successful candidate must end years of underperformance; our share price is down nearly 12% over the last decade compared with double-digit gains for our rivals. We’re looking to improve our talent management after a string of questionable executive appointments. The chair will have to navigate a civil war among our shareholders: For some, BP lost its way by going green, while for others, we’re not green enough. You should be comfortable overseeing debt — we have a mountain of it — and with improving safety, as our track record is patchy. We anticipate the chair will preside over a meaningful reduction in the workforce.” Bloomberg Opinion #oil $BP #BP

In my latest column for Bloomberg Opinion, I weigh in on the temporary trading ban in India on Jane Street. Even if you don’t share my suspicion of excessive financialisation and $500,000 starting salaries for engineers, perhaps you will agree that the Covid-era gamification of finance — in India, a carnival of weekly option expiries — went too far before regulators woke up to its dangers. They need to do more work, I argue, especially to make cash equity markets work better. Here’s a free to read link: https://lnkd.in/gqxSPqVg For news on this, follow Bloomberg News

We still lack many answers about the Texas tragedy, but 3 lessons are immediately clear: 1. The climate is becoming increasingly dangerous 2. We must prepare for every contingency 3.
