As a person who writes columns on the internet, I have a lot of sympathy for both sides of the artificial intelligence copyright debate:

There are some factual disputes here — how close does the large language model come to someone else’s copyrighted work, etc. — but mostly there is a philosophical disagreement. Does an LLM mostly remix existing text, or does it mostly learn from existing text and generate new text? Or are those the same thing?
