I began my career at the University of Toronto where I obtained a BSc. (Honours) in Zoology before moving to the University of British to carry out an MSc. (Zoology) in conservation biology. I switched topics to focus on disease ecology for my PhD studies at the University of Edinburgh where I investigated the ecology of malaria vector-parasite interactions. I have stayed in malaria vector ecology and control research ever since. I held postdoctoral positions at the University of Edinburgh and at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania (where was I was seconded from Wageningen University, Netherlands). I joined the University of Glasgow as a BBSRC David Philips Research Fellow in 2006.

I am an infectious disease ecologist who specializes in the transmission and control of mosquito-borne diseases.
My research interests include

- Surveillance and control of the mosquito vectors of malaria and arboviruses
- Impact of environmental change on vector-borne diseases
- Epidemiology and control of vector-borne diseases
- Assessing the risk of mosqito vector-borne disease emergence in Scotland
- Capacity strengthening for vector control in disease endemic countries.
I have a close and longstanding research and training partnership with the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania where I hold an appointment as a Visiting Scientist
