The US Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to leave its headquarters for new offices — potentially outside the capital. Housing Secretary Scott Turner has made no secret of his disdain for the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building, HUD's home since 1968. He described the Brutalist bunker, which was designed by Marcel Breuer, as the "ugliest building in D.C." Aesthetic judgments aside, the costs for deferred maintenance for the long-neglected building amount to more than $500 million. Just over the next 5 years costs for needed upgrades add up to $95 million. While HUD is looking at other office options in the D.C. metro region, the department is not limiting its sights to the DMV. According to people familiar with the discussions, other options include Houston; Akron, Ohio; and Kansas City, Missouri. A HUD spokesperson says this list is "100% false."
