India’s air traffic growth has been an outlier in recent times making the South Asian nation the third largest domestic aviation market in the world, right after the United States and China. However, despite this double-digit growth, only a small percentage of consumers here have taken flights leaving a large headroom for airlines and airports to grow in a country of 1.4 billion people At the same time India also has airports that have no takers - India’s official data shows about a dozen of the 140 airports in the country didn’t see a single passenger between December and March, effectively rendering them ghost airports. More than a third averaged less than 5 flights daily for most of last year. As many as 70 airports host less than 10 flights a day. Smaller airports require a minimum of 10 flights a day to break even. To be fair, India has achieved partial success in reviving some airports in its hinterlands through a regional connectivity scheme that offers subsidized fares and incentives for airlines (by means of lower taxes on aviation turbine fuel and a waiver on airport charges) - this does give some hope of a revival of these airports in the future. Till that happens, do find some time to read this Big Take by Bloomberg News on India’s Ghost airports that are struggling to attract flights and passengers. https://lnkd.in/gwFnRw_H #india # ghostairports
