The US economy is set to lose billions of dollars in revenue in 2025 as foreign tourists rethink their vacation plans amid increased hostility at the border, rising geopolitical frictions and global economic uncertainty. US airports welcomed 10% fewer tourists in March compared to a year earlier, and weaker flight and hotel bookings are hinting at a sustained pullback ahead. Canadian videographer Curtis Allen canceled an upcoming US vacation after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on his home country and suggested it should become the 51st US state. Allen and his partner have been on multiple camping trips to Oregon over the years, but in 2025, they will be traveling around British Columbia instead. “We're not just staying home,” said Allen. “We're going to go spend the same money somewhere else.” Here's a gift link to read our Bloomberg News story, edited by Matthew Boesler: https://lnkd.in/dWajdDMW

eFishery was one of Asia's top startups, a crown jewel of Indonesia. Its revenues, profit and impact attracted hundreds of millions of dollars from SoftBank, Temasek, Sequoia India, Wavemaker, G42 and countless other top-flight investors. But the vast majority of it was faked. To find out how and why, we spoke to dozens of investors, employees and farmers. And we travelled to Bandung to seek out the founder Gibran Huzaifah. After much effort, he agreed to meet and tell all. When I spoke to many who had been burned, one question kept coming up. Why did he do it? The answer is far more complex than money. It's about ego and pride but also pressure from investors telling founders to change their business and achieve certain results or lose everything. This is therefore a story of our times. Of global VC cash - and occasionally terrible advice - being thrown at the old-world reality of doing business at the edge of frontier markets. And founders who dream of being the one's who shape the universe, if only they can make the numbers bend to their will. https://lnkd.in/ev-juuyg
