Why Interest Rates Are Shooting Up All Around the World

This week the big story in markets is the selloff in bonds. Yields on benchmark 10-year US Treasuries jumped 20 basis points from last Friday’s low, while the 30-year rate is back above 5%. Meanwhile, 30-year Japanese government bonds clocked their highest yield since records began in 1999. And rates on UK gilts, German bunds, and Australian bonds are also rising. To make matters even more unusual, US Treasury yields are going up while the dollar is weakening (something that doesn’t usually happen.) So what’s going on? And how much does this have to with worries over the US fiscal position, the return of inflation, and the outlook for rate cuts from the Federal Reserve? When we think about the prospect of deglobalization (whatever that means) we often think about it in terms of the goods economy. Supply chains get rerouted. Manufacturing becomes more localized, and possibly less efficient. But changes to the global world order also have implications for Wall Street, and the world of dealmaking. Odd lots is my favorite podcast but i do have to say for Biotech and how medicines are made it would be nice to have someone actually from BIO or PhRMA who can talk more about manufacturing than a banker. No offense to banker but there were a lot of basic mistakes CHO cells or Chinese Hampster Ovary cells don’t come from China and are not impacted by tariffs. It’s a cell line used specific for Recombinant protein manufacturing or mAbs ( monoclonal antibodies). The manufacturing of large molecule biologics is extremely complex and the Quality release aspect as well. Phase 1 trials also need IND submission and FDA review. They are in humans for safety and efficacy of a medicine in development.

Great subject podcast, I’ve always wanted to understand this. What was missing from the episode was how capital is actually allocated by the government to the specific companies such as DeepSeek. Does DeepSeek have government investment? When does the government step in support? Or is all those private capital? Are there other DeepSeek’s the Chinese government is supporting? That was left very unclear to me.
